Former convicted murderer back behind bars

OZARK - John Charles Spellman is back behind bars as he sits in the Dale County Jail awaiting possible extradition to Florida.

Spellman made headlines in October of 1984 for his arrest in the 1983 kidnapping and murder of Cynthia Wuolukka. He was subsequently convicted of murder in September of 1985. After 18 years in prison, Spellman was released on an overturned conviction. Despite the release of Spellman in the 1983 murder case, a grand jury indictment remains active, meaning the state of Alabama possesses the right to retry Spellman at any time.

Spellman’s most recent troubles began on March 16 when he was arrested in Panama City, Fla., and charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and possession of GHB, otherwise known as the "Date Rape Drug."

Spellman bonded out of jail and is still waiting to face those charges. He found himself back behind Alabama bars after a police officer discovered during a routine traffic stop that warrants had been issued for him in Bay County, Fla., for non-related charges.

He was pulled over in Level Plains for a traffic violation on Aug. 20, and according to Geneva/Dale County District Attorney Kirke Adams, Spellman provided a false name to the police officer, giving the name of Terry Spellman.

"Upon further investigation, Level Plains police discovered that it was not Terry Spellman and he was charged with providing a false name to law enforcement," Adams said. "They investigated further and found that it was John Charles Spellman and that’s when they discovered the warrants on him."

The current warrants are not related to the possession charges Spellman is facing, but are out of Bay County, Fla., in connection with charges of aggravated stalking, burglary of a residence, and violation of a protection order.

Adams did not confirm who the alleged victim is in the current warrants, but did say that all three crimes involved the same victim. Spellman’s most recent girlfriend filed the protection order against him.

Last spring, Spellman’s wife, (Angela Tess Spellman) was reported missing and later found dead. A grand jury did not bring an indictment in that case due to a lack of determination as to the cause of death because the decomposition of the body had reached a point where a cause of death could not be determined.

Spellman faced District Court Judge Stan Garner Jr. Monday morning, in the Dale County Courthouse, for a first hearing regarding his extradition to Florida.

According to Adams, Spellman immediately began professing his innocence, at which time Garner informed him that it was not the right time for admissions of guilt or pleas of innocence.

Garner was simply presiding over an extradition hearing, informing the suspect of his rights and concluded the hearing by matching Florida’s current $30,000 bond and setting another hearing in 30 days to review Spellman’s status.

Spellman has the option to fight extradition, which will ultimately leave him in the Dale County Jail for an unforeseen length of time, or he can cooperate fully with Florida law enforcement officials, at which time he will be transported back to Bay County to face the charges against him.

Garner will also review Florida’s action in 30 days to ensure they are either acting on the extradition or not. Adams said that the last information he received was that Florida was already initiating the extradition process.

well, namom, it shouldn't be deleted. it was in the freaking NEWSPAPER! how many "coinsidences" (sp) is one person allotted?? GHB??? thats not like something one on the street would use for a nice outcome...
soooo....if someone is using date rape drug on the women he meets.....well, that reflects the personality huh? guess he COULD HAVE BEEN selling it....would that make it any more moral??
come on florida!!! do your thing!!!

WHAT IS GHB?

GHB (Gamma hydroxybutyrate) usually comes as an odorless liquid, slightly salty to the taste, and sold in small bottles. It has also been found in powder and capsule form.
It is classified as a sedative-hypnotic, and was originally developed as a sleep-aid.
A similar drug, "GBL," is often sold under different names and turns into GHB in the body, having the same effect.
WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS?

At lower doses GHB has a euphoric effect similar to alcohol, and can make the user feel relaxed, happy and sociable.
Higher doses can make the user feel dizzy and sleepy, and can sometimes cause vomiting, muscle spasms, and loss of consciousness.
Overdoses will always cause loss of consciousness (temporary coma), and will slow down breathing. Sometimes, and particularly if mixed with alcohol, GHB can slow breathing down to a dangerously low rate, which has caused a number of deaths.

What goes around comes around, I knew it was only a matter of time, that John would be back in jail for something......He needs to stay there, and according to the Bay Co. officials he just might.

I hope he does!!! I have worried about his 3rd victim to no end. I am sure there is another woman and possibly another that is to meet her death through Spellman. Do you know anything about his extradition?

The grapevine says Spellman is in a Florida jail.... I do think Raiford prison would be a more befitting place for him!

My name is Amber Elizabeth Jordan Sheldon; I am Angela Tess Jordan Spellman's younger sister. Along with our brothers, James Daniel Jordan and Jeremy William Jordan Sheldon, I ask that kindness and compassion be remembered in this trying time. James, Jer, and I are only in our twenties (we are 28, 24, and 22) and we, especially James, who has cared for our neice, Pamela Isis, are beside ourselves with emotions that are both positive and negative. I thank you for your interest in supporting us in getting to the bottom of our sister's death. No matter what, John Spellman needs to be taken out of society, and I plan to do whatever it takes to legally see that such happens.

Hi Amber, I am Angela's aunt. I don't believe we have ever met. I dont think I have ever even met your dad. Were you at the funeral? I have been part of the Baker family for over 20 years. I've known Angela and James since they were very young. They lived with my inlaws on and off for a lot of their childhood.

James is the real hero in all of this. He is doing a great job with Isis, and hopefully our family can get custody of Orion somehow someday. I worry about him a lot. He is such a sweet child. I don't worry much about John getting what he deserves, because I know that if he doesn't get it in this lifetime, he will get it in the next. Sometimes, we just have to be patient and trust in GOD that Angelas death will be avenged at some point. I think it may be beginning already. I can imagine that it is hard for you, anytime you lose a family member it is not something that you get over quickly, but they way that Ang died, it makes it even harder for the healing to finish. Good luck with that.

Venus,
As far as I know he is still in jail, although I could be wrong.  When I call my in-laws which isn't as often as I used to, I don't always remember to ask her if she knows anything new.  Although, I may possibly still have the email address of some one who would probably know.  If I have time today I'll try to email him.  Busy day here for us!  Going to make popcorn balls for the kid's friends here in the neighborhood....We aren't used to having many trick or treaters , but now that we are in the BIG city (NOT)  Population 815...LOL  we will have some littles ghouls i'm sure! BUT then again, we are supposed to have some SNOW by tonight also , but when has alittle snow ever stopped kids?
